Fred was born on July 24, 1939 at Boulder Community Hospital to Frederick Frank Stengel and Ethel Frances De Weese.
Although Fred was known to be a third generation rancher/farmer and did this from a very early age, one of his first jobs outside of this was as a mailman in Boulder County. He was a school bus driver for Boulder County Schools. He hauled hay for many of the ranchers as well and was a ditch rider for the Left-Hand Ditch Company. He worked for Flatirons Premix, Flatirons Structures and Lawson Construction where Fred moved heavy machinery and concrete sections to build the bridges and roads in the Glenwood Canyon. He retired from Lawson Construction and after doing so pursued his lifelong love of full-time cattle ranching. Fred loved to use his real-life skills and was a true homesteader. Still he always looked forward to his evenings, enjoying a night cap with Jan to bring their busy day to a close.
Fred married Janice Gragg on September 22, 1984 at their forever home which would later be known as the Nebo Angus Ranch.
Throughout his life, Fred enjoyed Go-Kart racing, hunting, ice fishing, camping and motorcycle riding.
Fred is survived by his spouse, Janice (Gragg) Stengel, his children, Tony, Juliann, Tom, Brad, Jill and Tyler, his sister, Jodel, his sister in law, Mary (Mare) and nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was proceeded in death by his parents, his brother, Andrew and his son, Tim.
