George L. Thompson

George L Thompson, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed away at the age of 83 on Monday, October 12th, 2020 in Longmont. George was born on February 17th, 1937 in Salt Lake City, UT to Leonard and Lois Thompson. After living in El Paso, TX and Deming, NM they moved to Phoenix, AZ in 1941 where he lived with his parents until he joined the Air Force in 1954. In 1958 he married Sally (Sarah Mills) the love of his life, and had two daughters, Denice and Karen. George retired from the Air Force in 1968. He talked most about his service time in Germany. He liked the culture and the beer. After leaving the Air Force, George moved his family to Rawlins, WY where he worked as a manager in the sporting goods department at Bi-Rite Sporting Goods. While living in Rawlins, he was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He and his family spent time hunting, fishing, camping and supporting his daughters in all of their activities. Due to his youngest daughter’s health, George moved his family to Colorado in 1975. George worked as a realtor in Longmont until 1999. He and Sally traveled with their 5th wheel to Florida every winter after retirement. Although his favorite trip every year was to Phoenix, AZ to see his sister Colleen, brother Bud, his favorite nieces (Connie Metzger and Sandy Gailey) and many other great nieces and nephews. He really enjoyed talking to his nephew (Ron Mills) on the phone and hearing about his family. George also spent several years delivering Meals on Wheels. He loved meeting and talking to the recipients every week. George was a caring man who was loved by all especially his daughter Denice and his grandsons, Brett Hailey and Justin Wojtysiak who were his pride and joy. George was preceded in death by his wife Sally and daughter Karen (Thompson) Mavis, mother Lois and father Leonard Thompson, sister Colleen Mills, sister Joan Rawlins, brother Bud Thompson, brother in-law (George Baker). He is survived by daughter Denice (Ernie) Wojtysiak of Windsor, CO; grandsons Brett (Molly) Hailey of Ft. Collins and Justin Wojtysiak of Greeley, sister in-law Nellore (Randall) Collins, sister in-law Pam (David) Goranson, brother in-law Rick (Alice) Baker plus many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends and family on Oct 30th, 2020 at 12:00pm at George’s home. We will remember the great man that George was by telling stories and drinking a beer. Just the way he would have wanted it.
