
Hazel McCord Smith, 75, who lived in the Longmont-Lyons area for 48 years, died Saturday, April 5, 2014. She died peacefully, comforted by her daughters, other family members and friends. She was born on November 28, 1938, in Coin, Iowa, to G. Joseph and Mary A. McCord. On May 24, 1968, she married Paul Smith, and they continued to live in Lyons where they had three daughters all of whom grew up there. Paul and Hazel moved to Nebraska briefly after his retirement, but following his death in 1999, she returned to Colorado, and lived in Longmont. Hazel loved word games and puzzles, and always solved the word Jumble, cryptograms, jigsaw and crossword puzzles. She enjoyed many hours visiting with her lifelong friend Bob Miller of Longmont and her beloved sisters-in-laws Betty Wilson and Patty Sue Smith both of Longmont.Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, her parents; and her sister, Evelyn.She is survived by her daughters, Jaime (Mike) Foster of Firestone, Colorado; Jennifer (Paul) Davis of Parma Heights, Ohio; and Jeri Smith of Alma, Nebraska. Stepdaughters Dawn (Steve) Lawson of Loveland, Colorado and Kimberly Loya of Kansas City, Kansas; a sister, Marilyn Hair of DeWitt, Iowa; a brother, Jerry McCord of Ramona, California; 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Smith's graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 12 at the Lyons Cemetery with Pastor John Thieme of Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church in Longmont officiating. Her cremains will be interred there beside those of her husband, Paul. A reception will be held to celebrate her life at the Grange Hall located next to the Hygiene United Methodist Church at 7542 Hygiene Road in Hygiene, Colorado.
