Herb was born February 29, 1936, to Lloyd Acord and Frances (Rhoades) Acord in a small farmhouse in Gowanda. He grew up helping his parents farm, they taught him to work hard and have determination, skills that served him well throughout his life. He enlisted in the US Marine Corp in 1954 and was an automobile mechanic during his service. He often shared stories about his time in the Marine Corp, true to Semper Fidelis, fellow Marines were always comrades. He married Virginia (Bigger) Acord on May 17, 1959, in a private ceremony in Englewood, they remained married for 64 years. They are a fortunate couple to have loved each other dearly throughout their whole lives. He was a general contractor in the local area for 45 years building many beautiful custom homes. Herb had the opportunity to retire from construction and follow his true calling of farming after he inherited the family farm from his Uncle Gilbert. Several times a day he could be spotted around the farm on the 4-wheeler checking on his cattle. His family was his joy in life, he was so proud of his grandchildren Eric and Maggie for being caring people and hard workers. Herb was an honorable man of his word, a man who kept his promises, who could be trusted, and relied upon. He always purchased the newest electronics and appliances, even if he didn’t know how to use them, he could count on his kids or grandkids to show him how. He was often on the lookout for new cooking appliances for Virginia! He was known for his generous hospitality, nobody ever felt like a stranger around him. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed playing cards, he was part of a monthly poker group up until the last few months of his life. He is survived by his wife Virginia Acord, three children Laurie Walker (Charles Walker), Leslie Shoecraft (Tom Shoecraft) and Jeff Acord, two Grandchildren Eric Acord and Margaret (Maggie) Shoecraft and one great grandchild, Sophie Acord. He is preceded in death by his parents Lloyd Acord and Frances (Rhoades) Acord, his uncle Gilbert Acord, his brother Larry Acord and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
A private graveside military service is scheduled at Mountain View Cemetery in Longmont. A celebration of life will be held September 15, 2023, at the American Legion, 315 South Bowen Street, Longmont, 11 am – 2 pm.
