

Herman Sven August Olander was born January 18, 1919 in the old Longmont Hospital located @ 4th Ave. & Coffman St. Longmont, CO. He was the second of four sons born to Martin and Olivia A. Swanson (Svensson) Olander, a Swedish speaking family living SE of Longmont in the Rinn community. Herman died peacefully Friday afternoon, November 6, 2015 at Longmont United Hospital, surrounded by his family.He attended Weld County schools, Colorado State University and University of Denver, School of Business to pursue a career in accounting, receiving a BS/BA degree in June 1942. He served in the Army/Air Corp as an NCO during WWII. He received his commission after attending OCS at Harvard University in 1944. In 1947 he transitioned to the U.S. Air Force remaining in the reserves and was called up during the Korean War, for a year and a half (1952-1953) with the Auditor General's Staff while stationed in Japan. He resigned his commission, honorably discharged, returning home in 1953.Herman married Opal Evelyn Ellison on March 10, 1944, starting a home and family in Colorado. Between 1945 through 1949, he & Opal had three sons, Stephen, Paul and Douglas. With the support of this family, he returned to school earning his MBA in Accounting in 1962, while working full time and attending night classes. He spent his career in the accounting/auditing field until 1955 when he began a career with the Dow Chemical Co working as a Cost Accountant, Rocky Flats Division, Auditor and Chief Auditor for 11 years, and Dow's Joint Venture Auditor for the Oil & Gas Division in Houston, Texas - retiring after 25 years in March 1980. Herman was active in various professional and civic organizations, including, the Institute of Internal Auditors as chapter treasurer (Denver) and president and VP of the Rocky Mtn. Region (U.S. & Canada) along with his support of First Lutheran Church and the Ryssby Church.He and Opal returned to Colorado, to a new home they had built in Estes Park prior to their retirement where they lived for eight plus years before returning to Longmont. Between 1988 “ 2009, he and Opal lived in several residences in the Longmont area, moving into The Bridge Assisted Living Facility in January 2009. Herman was preceded in death by his parents, his three brothers, son Paul and wife Opal. He is survived by his immediate family: son Stephen (Barbara) of Longmont, son Douglas (Maureen) of Orangevale, CA, granddaughter Shannon (Lance) Roth and great grandsons Justin, Caden and Paxson Roth of Pleasanton, CA, along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews here and in Sweden.Visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00pm, Friday, November 13, 2015 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10:30am, Saturday, November 14, 2015 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church with burial at Ryssby Cemetery.
