Mr. Finley,
Sir, as a fellow Marine I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served with the USMC fighting the Japanese in the Pacific during WW II. It was the history and accomplishments made by you and your fellow Marines of the “Old Corps” back then that all us Marines who followed in your footsteps have always tried to live up to.  And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

Dear Dan,
I am still stunned with the news of Homer's passing.  I am glad that you, Terri, & Evie were able to be with him at the time.  Thank you for letting us know.  I had just talked with him a bit on Saturday night, & I am still shocked at how fast it happened.  I will miss him.  He was a wonderful step-father to me all these years.  

I am glad that Homer was able to spend his last few years with you & all the family in Colorado.  I know it made him very happy to be near you, and have you keeping an eye on him and looking out for him.  Thank you.

If you could, please let me know Evie's address, I would like to write her a note.  I appreciate that she has been such a good friend to Homer these last few months.  Thank you again and my deepest sympathies to all.

Dan & Terri,
Homer was one of a kind.  Generous, happy, thankful, gracious.  A great guy!  Kent adored him and their long rambling talks.  He will be missed.  Please realize that Kent and I marveled at the special bond the two of you shared.  You certainly did the right thing in moving him to Colorado 5 years ago.  I'll send you some really good photos of the 3 of you, and all of us on the pool deck, from our cruise through the Alaskan Passage.

Our family was very sad to hear of Homer's passing.  From the day he joined our family he was always a gracious host, grateful, & loved by all of us.  

From 1990 to 2006, he and Marcia opened their home the first week in August to our family~Mary Lou & Bob & Bobby & sometimes Georgia Howland.  We always had a great time when we all got together every year.  Homer was missed when he moved to Colorado but we thank all of you for taking such good care of him.  

Words fall short.....but hopefully caring goes the distance.

Dear Dan, Terri & Family,
A long, happy, & blessed life for a loved one, does not make it any easier to say good-bye.  Sounds like Homer had that kind of life.  We knew him for only a small fraction of that life and only in the setting of Spar City.  Wish we could have spent more time with him,  but it was enough to know he was pretty amazing.  Knowing his son well (that's you, Dan) also speaks well for the kind of man he was.  And he was lucky to have you, and then Terri, in his life.   He leaves a hole for sure, but know that we care and grieve with you.

95 is the new 50. Mr. Finley, you redefined for me what aging with grace looks like. Your zest for life and sense of humor will continue to inspire me for the rest of my years. 

Thank you for your service to our nation as a member of the 1st Marine War Dog Platoon in WWII. I loved hearing your firsthand account of the early days of our nation's military working dog program.
