Mike was born July 26, 1938 in Athens, Georgia to Ralph B. Nunn and Cleo V. (Garner) Nunn. He was raised by his Aunt Mary Lou Rawson and his “Granny”, Mead Miller, after his mother was killed in a car accident when he was 4 ½ years old. He graduated from Oglethorpe County High School in 1956.
In 1957 he joined the United States Air Force and served various duty assignments in Japan, Korea (on an island in the Yellow Sea), and South Carolina, as a certified Radio Relay Equipment technician. In 1962 during the Cuban missile crisis he was assigned to the Strategic Air Command (SAC) Headquarters at Offutt AFB, Nebraska, where he worked in the SAC Underground on what was then the largest computer in the world. That's also where he met his wife of 54 years, Kathleen Hargis. They were married in Omaha, Nebraska on December 28, 1963. He achieved the rank of Airman First Class, received an honorable discharge in 1965, and accepted a position with Control Data Corporation in Omaha. Their two sons were born there in 1970 and 1973, and during that time he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Bellevue College and graduated “with distinction” with all “A” and “B” grades on June 10, 1978. Then in 1982 the family moved to Longmont after Mike accepted a position with Storage Technology Corp. in Louisville, Colorado. After many Quality awards and filling various technical, engineering, and management positions, he retired from Storage Tech in 1997 at 59 years old due to the onset of health issues from his PKD.
He enjoyed playing golf, camping and hiking in the mountains, photography, traveling (especially to Hawaii frequently to visit his son, Greg), and spending lots of time enjoying all the activities of his two very talented grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen of Longmont; two sons, Gregory and his partner, Michael, of The Big Island of HI, and Matthew and his wife, Angie, of Firestone CO; and two grandchildren, Bailey (16) and Riley (10); and various nephews and nieces and extended family members in Florida and Georgia.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, his Aunt Mary Lou and “Granny”, two brothers and three sisters (Benjamin Nunn, Douglas Nunn, Shirley “Joyce” Owen, Myrtle Burgess, and Edna Gaskins, all but one having died from the inherited effects of PKD as well), and other extended family members.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 20, 2018 at the Howe Mortuary Chapel in Longmont. A reception will follow the services.
