Longtime Longmont resident, Irene Ida Curran, 79, passed away surrounded by family on June 4, 2020 at her home. Born exactly 4 years-to-the-day as her older sister on June 28, 1940, in Brooklyn, NY, Irene was a first-generation American-born daughter to German emigrant parents Martha (Bergmann) and Harry G. Schreiber. On August 25, 1960, she married the love of her life, Matthew (Matty) William Curran, in Bellerose, NY. Together, they moved across country to settle in Longmont, CO, just before the Big Thompson flood in the 1970’s. In addition to raising 4 sons, Irene worked a number of years as a “lunch lady” at Skyline High School and later in the circulation department for the Longmont Daily Times Call newspaper. She and Matty briefly lived in Allenspark, CO, where Irene (known locally as the “Vogel Frau”) was very active at the Hilltop Guild and the Allenspark Church; making many new life-long friends along the way.
Irene never met a stranger – she had a flair for connecting with people. She enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, camping, watching Jeopardy, making crafts, spoiling her grandchildren, telling jokes, talking on the phone with friends & family. She loved the Brooklyn Dodgers and was never without at least one black Labrador Retriever dog. Irene had the prettiest cornflower-blue eyes that sparkled, accompanied by a thick NY accent right until the very end of her full life. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
Preceding her in death are her eldest son, Michael Matthew Curran and her husband of nearly 60 years, Matthew (Matty) Curran.
Surviving her are sons Daniel J. (Stephanie) Curran of Ft. Collins, CO; Brian P. Curran of Longmont, CO; and Matthew S. (Angela) Curran of Parrish, FL. She is further survived by her beloved sister Eleanor French of Lindenhurst, NY and three grandchildren: Abigail Irene Curran, Adam Joseph Curran, and Madison Corinne Curran.
The Curran family would like to thank Suncrest Hospice and Home Instead Senior Care for their dedication to Irene’s end of life comfort.
In Lieu of flowers, please make a charitable donation in Irene’s name to the Longmont Humane Society.
A private inurnment will be held on Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at Longmont Mountain View Cemetery.
