Janice Lynn Seidman

Janice was born on November 26, 1952 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Jack and Jean Schu. Raised in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania by a steel worker and a devoted mother, Janice was instilled at a young age with lifelong values of hard work, ingenuity, and commitment to family. Janice was joined by a younger brother, John, in 1958 and with their boxer Jenny and often their beloved grandmother Minnie, the Schu family lived a good and loving life.

Janice met her devoted husband Ben Seidman in 1969 at Rensselaer Polytechnic University in Troy, New York. She would cut his hair, and he would give her rides in his car. Shortly after graduating, Ben moved to Longmont, Colorado, determined to bring Janice with him as his wife. In 1976, Ben proposed to Janice over a Thanksgiving visit to Colorado, and the two were married May 21, 1977 near Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. Janice then moved to Longmont, and the two began their life together.

Adventurous in spirit, Janice convinced her husband early in their marriage to travel the globe. They began with a honeymoon cruise to Alaska, and soon enough were traversing the streets of Singapore, swimming the waters off of Australia, and sampling baked goods in Europe. Along with her husband, and often her children and grandson, Janice would visit all seven continents, all fifty states, and over seventy countries and territories. With an extraordinary talent for planning, Janice always crafted exciting and fulsome trips full of art, history, natural beauty, fabulous food, and exploration.

In 1982, Janice gave birth to her first daughter, Darcy Jean, while simultaneously studying at Colorado State University for a degree in Civil Engineering. Janice juggled being a devoted mother and a dedicated student with grace. In 1986, while pregnant with her second child, Janice and her husband Ben designed and built the house that would become their family home for the next forty years. As the house was nearly finished, Janice gave birth to her second daughter, Arielle Annaliese.

Janice was a devoted mother to both of her girls, committing countless hours to their education and enrichment, teaching them math, science, literature, cooking, baking, and piano. As the Seidman family traveled the world, Janice took special care to educate her girls on the architecture, art, and music of the places they visited.

In 2004, Janice became a grandmother, as Darcy gave birth to Sean Patrick. Janice adored being a grandmother, and showered Sean with affection and the same devotion to education that she bestowed upon her daughters.

Janice’s dedication to education extended well beyond her family, volunteering and working throughout her adult life in various aspects of education. She volunteered with the State of Colorado to improve math textbooks, she worked as a substitute teacher, and she supervised evaluation of student standardized testing. Janice always believed in the power of a good education, and sought to confer that education to as many students as she could with both rigor and passion.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Jean Schu, and her grandmother, Minnie Coleman.

She is survived by her husband Ben, her brother John, her daughters Darcy and Arielle, and her grandson Sean.

Janice was fiercely loved by her husband and her family, with whom she shared many great adventures. She was hard to impress, but when she was impressed – whether by the sight of the Grand Canyon or Picasso’s Guernica in Madrid, Spain – she was changed for life. She had a dry sense of humor with an infectious laugh that, while hard to elicit, gave one a great sense of accomplishment when achieved. Janice cared immensely for her family’s well-being and never stopped being a doting and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be deeply and dearly missed.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, August 7, 2026, at Howe Mortuary & Crematory, located at 439 Coffman Street, in Longmont, Colorado.
