She was born in 1951 in Springfield, MN to Richard and Elaine Rohlik, and grew up on a farm in Wanda, surrounded by siblings, cousins, and family friends. Joan was the second of ten brothers and sisters, and considered herself the luckiest girl in the world to have spent her youth walking bean fields, playing in groves, reading encyclopedias with her father, and helping her mother hold down the fort.
She worked at the Mayo clinic, IBM and Northrop Grumman, but she always said the best job she ever had was being a mom. She was extraordinary at it. And even better at being a grandma. Her grandchildren were the light of her life, and she made sure they knew it with cards at every holiday, reminders on birthdays, and all the cookies.
Joan was a gifted gardener and quilter. She loved making care packages for the soldiers with neighborhood friends. She vehemently cheered on the Colorado Avalanche, and she liked to eat her butter with a little bit of corn on the cob.
Joan was always there with a warm smile, big hug, or delicious meal. She shared love with everyone, but none so much as her husband, Mike. He was her hero, confidante, and best friend. They were married for nearly 50 years.
Joan is survived by her husband, Michael, her children Michael Jr. (Abbe), Christina, Jonathan (Emily), and Katie (Michael), plus eight siblings, and eight grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her father, Richard, her mother, Elaine, and her brother, Joseph.
A mass to celebrate her life will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Longmont, CO on February 15th at 10:30 AM, with a celebration of life immediately to follow at St. Claire Hall at St. Francis of Assisi.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joan’s name to the Salvation Army, Samaritan's Purse or Denver Rescue Mission.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.howemortuary.com with her family.
