He was born September 3, 1948 in Denison, IA. He served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps by fighting in the Vietnam War as an artillery specialist. He then married the love of his life, Janis Betts, on February 15, 1975 at Messiah Lutheran Church where they are longtime members. They raised three beautiful daughters, Jenny, Jamie, and Jacque.
John retired from RTD in 2012, where he was known as a bus driver with a big heart. After retirement, he enjoyed volunteering at Meals on Wheels, traveling the world with his wife, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also loved spending time at his mountain property riding horses with his dogs, 4-wheeling, and enjoying campfires under the stars. He was known for his sense of humor, unlimited patience, and his gentle and compassionate spirit.
John was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Bagwell, and his mother, Ruby Bagwell. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Janis, his three daughters, Jenny Kilgroe (Ben), Jamie Griffin (Robert), and Jacque Nason (James), and his four grandchildren: Logan, Micaela, JJ, and Jordyn.
The family will hold a private Celebration of Life at a later date. All memorial donations can be made to:
