John spent his early years in Pueblo before moving to Salt Lake City, Utah at the age of 12. He later settled in Longmont, Colorado, where he met the love of his life, Caroline Montez. The two shared 48 wonderful years of marriage.
John dedicated much of his working life to serving his community. In his younger years, he worked in construction, and he later spent over 30 years in custodial service before retiring Longmont Police Station in 2021. He was a man of strong faith who believed in God.
He was known to be a die-hard Denver Broncos fan and enjoyed spending time with his family above all else. He was often the life of the party and could be found playing horseshoes, basketball, darts, or listening to his favorite oldies music. One of his greatest joys was being a grandfather—“Papa”—a role he cherished deeply.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Caroline Montez; his son, John Montez (Lucero); and his daughters, Melissa Montez (Rene), Christina Montez (Flabio), and Caroline Montez (Lauro). He is also survived by his siblings Robert Montez, Albert Montez (Priscilla), Felix Montez (Patsy), Julian Montez (Kelly), Chris Montez (Adela), Mary Velasquez, and Frances Montez.
He leaves behind a large and loving family, including his grandchildren Dominic Montez, Arianna Montez, Alexis Montez, Julian Macias, Isiah Cervantes, Angelique Reyes, Annaliesse Montez, Audrina Montez, Elena Reyes, and Flabio Reyes, as well as his great-grandchild Leilani Gonzalez. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on May 15, 2026, at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 326 Terry St., Longmont, CO 80501, US.
