Born in Oak Park, Illinois on May 22, 1947, he moved to Boulder, Colorado at the age of 16 and spent the rest of his life as a proud resident of Colorado. He graduated from Fairview High School, Metro State University with a Bachelor’s Degree, and got a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Denver University.
He was an Army Veteran who did two tours in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot and earned several medals of honor including two Purple Heart Awards. Afterward, he served a long, successful career as a police officer, detective and supervisor at Longmont Police Department. He also served as a Lieutenant and retired from Adams County Sheriff’s Department. In 2021 he worked alongside other Vietnam veterans to have the State Senate establish March 30th as a commemorative state holiday known as “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day”. This holiday appropriately recognizes the sacrifices made by Vietnam veterans and was established to help rectify the unfortunate way many Veterans were treated when they came home from duty.
Eric was a man of many passions throughout the years including caring for exotic pets (snakes, ferrets, skunks, pigs, show dogs, lizards and more), training Search and Rescue dogs and almost any outdoor activity including running, biking, rock climbing, fly fishing and camping. He was an avid hiker (always hiking in jeans) and loved the outdoors. The mountains were his church and he was most at peace in nature. He loved to travel and explored many parts of the world and the U.S. in his lifetime. He had a big heart and volunteered throughout the years with Larimer County Search & Rescue, Boulder County Hospice, as well as wildlife rehabilitation centers in Boulder County.
He was a loved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, friend and mentor. He had a strong support and fellowship through the AA community for over 40 years.
He is preceded in death by his sister Brenda Ray of Marquette, Michigan. He is survived by and will be greatly missed by his sisters Lynn Jespersen of Boulder, Colorado and Michele Hoyt of Arlee, Montana, his daughter Buffy Hunt, his granddaughters Danyelle Gillespie, Teanna Gadlin and Jaymie Hopoate, and his three great-granddaughters.
