Joe was born on September 30, 1964 in San Diego, California to Joseph and Joan (Charity) Kaler. He was raised in a home centered on faith, which shaped his character and values throughout life. He attended Bonn American High School in Germany and graduated from Prior Lake High School in Minnesota, earning letters in band, track and football. He resided in Colorado for the majority of his life and maintained strong connections in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Joe earned an Associates Degree from Control Data Institute in Minneapolis before beginning a career in computer technology. He held various technical and managerial positions with Control Data Institute, Sony, Hitachi Data Systems, and Bold Group, among others, where he was highly respected as a leader, problem solver and process innovator.
As a lifelong musician, Joe was rarely out of arm’s reach of a guitar and served his church as a worship guitarist. Known affectionately as “Papa K,” he delighted in spending time with his children and stepchildren. A gifted and curious cook, he served portions so oversized that they were only surpassed by his love for his family. Joe was always ready to play (and usually win) a game of pool or darts and was fearless & gifted in tackling house projects (most of which he completed successfully).
Joe had a passion for projects; whether gracing the neighborhood with aromas of home-roasted coffee, bottling homemade vanilla, or drafting his own bible commentaries, he was always ready to tackle a challenge. With a story of childhood mischief or a well-timed “dad joke”, Joe and his hearty belly laugh brought joy to all who knew him.
Joe was known for his quick wit and sense of humor, quiet confidence, calming presence, and steadfast faith. While he will be incredibly missed, his family takes solace in the knowledge that he is at peace with his Savior.
In addition to his parents, Joe is survived by his loving wife, Sheila; brother Steve (Monica) and sister Sherilyn (Mark); two sons, Tanner (Amy) and Tristan; three stepchildren, Travis, Lindsay (Robert), and Logan; and two grandchildren.
