

June Douglas ""Snooks"" Hopkins of Longmont died September 24, 2006 at his residence. He was 86.Snooks was born on Flag Day, June 14, 1920 in Greeley, to Arthur Hopkins and Lotta Belle Baines Hopkins. He moved to Denver at an early age, attending North High and graduating from West High School in 1938. After high school he joined his mother and brother in business operating their family tavern in Denver. On October 1, 1940 Mr. Hopkins married his childhood sweetheart Vivian Robertson in St. Francis, Kansas. They were to celebrate their 66th Anniversary this Sunday. Mr. Hopkins joined the Army Air Corp in 1943. He was a B-17 pilot who worked stateside as a flight instructor ferrying planes. Following his discharge, he returned to Denver.For more than 25 years, Mr. Hopkins and his brother Art owned and operated the Burnham Tavern in Denver and the Park-O-Tel on West Colfax in Lakewood.In 1962, the Hopkins moved to Rawlins, Wyoming. Mr. Hopkins and his wife purchased the Bucking Horse Lodge, which they ran until 1976. After they retired they moved to Longmont. Mr. Hopkins was a member of the Unity Church of Boulder. He was a life member or the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and the American Legion. In addition, he was formerly a member of the Kiwanis Club. He enjoyed worldwide travel, golf, hunting, and playing games with his family and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents, a daughter Carol Lynn Kiehl, and three brothers Levi, Arthur and William Hopkins.Surviving are his wife of Longmont, two sons Ted Hopkins and his wife Beth of North Augusta, South Carolina, John Hopkins and his wife Vicky of Longmont, eight grandchildren Katie Starnes and her husband Julius of Longmont, Molly Hopkins of Portland, OR, Doug Diehl and his wife Shelly of Gillette, WY and their children Devin and Taylor, Tony Diehl and his wife Amanda of Rapid City, SD and their children Alexa, Zachary and Kendall, David Diehl and his wife Leah of Austin, TX and their children Logan, Isabella and Leila Vivian, Kristi Baty and her husband Ace of Flagstaff, AZ and their children Elinor and Maddie, Noah Hopkins of Charleston, S.C., and Brian Crowder and his wife Cindi, of Erie and their children Zach and Alex.A cremation has been entrusted to the Howe Mortuary and Crematory.
