Kenneth Charles Dell was born on March 18th, 1938, to Charles A Dell and Lola Mary (O’Mallory) Dell in Billings, MT. Charles died in their Roundup, MT home when Ken was just three. Ken’s mother remarried and moved the family to Bozeman where Ken graduated from Gallatin County High in 1956 and Montana State University in 1963.
Following graduation, he moved to Denver, CO to begin his career in City Planning & Urban Design. He first worked with a design consulting firm, then for the City of Denver in their Neighborhood Studies program, and later for the City of Boulder Planning Department.
While living in Boulder in 1968, Ken met the love his life, Sally Ann Henderson. They were married February 28, 1969, and began their family with two amazing daughters, Tana and Tiffany.
In 1972, Ken went to work for the City of Longmont establishing their Planning Department as Planning Director. He prepared the first Comprehensive Plan for the City. He was incredibly proud of this project, and even though the plan has been updated and amended, his original concepts for expanding Longmont have remained as the current Comprehensive Plan for the city.
Ken started his own consulting firm in Boulder which later merged with Rocky Mountain Consultants. He was with RMC for 23 years. His body of work included urban design & master plans for neighborhoods in Longmont, Boulder County, Louisville, Erie, Lafayette, and Frederick.
His favorite things to do outside of work were raising his two daughters, Tana and Tiffany, hosting celebrations with family and friends, working out, doing yardwork, reading spy novels and, attending Longmont Club lunches and volunteer events. He also enjoyed spoiling his Shih Tzus, fishing, golfing, watching Buffs and Broncos football and travelling with Sally. They travelled many places in the US, Europe, and Asia. Ken and Sally were together for 39 years when Sally passed in 2008. After Sally’s death, Ken travelled to China, New Zealand, Machu Picchu, Peru, and the Galapagos Islands, and Kauai.
Ken was preceded in death by his wife Sally; sister & brother-in-law, Kathleen & Burt Gibson of St George, UT; brother, Tom (Butch) Daly of Omaha, NE. He is survived by his daughters, Tana Dell & daughter-in law, Holly Taylor of Broomfield; daughter Tiffany Dell, and his beloved Shih Tzu Muffin of Longmont, CO; his sister and brother-in-law, Colleen and Dexter Busby of Great Falls, MT; sister-in-law, Gail Daly of Omaha, NE, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, March 20th at 3:00 PM with reception immediately following at Howe Mortuary at 439 Coffman St, Longmont, CO, 80501.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Ken, to the Parkinson’s Association of the Rockies, 1325 S. Colorado Blvd., Denver, CO 80222.
