

Langdon Leander Morton, Jr., Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army, retired, resident of Longmont, Colorado, passed away at his home on November 1, 2014. Langdon was born in Brewton, Alabama on September 16, 1922, the first of two sons born to Langdon L. Morton Sr. and Annie Sue Crum Morton. As an infant, Langdon resided at Fish Pond, Alabama, where Langdon Sr. managed the general store for the T.R. Miller Milling Company. Supplies for the store arrived daily by train, to include fresh milk for baby Langdon, the only child at the site. Langdon Sr. was managing a store in Brewton and built the family home by the time Langdon Jr. began school. After graduation from high school Langdon worked at ship building until the start of WWII.Langdon enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and he was a decorated veteran of the European Theater of Operations. He was honorably discharged in 1946. After the war he attended Auburn University and he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. After completing two years at Auburn, Langdon pursued a career as a commissioned officer in the United States Army. He was an artillery officer during the Korean conflict, and he always referred to that period as the most significant of his career. He earned more college credits by attending night school when possible. By 1963 he was eligible for the Bootstrap program, an educational program that enabled active duty personnel to be granted time off from active duty to complete their college degree. Langdon attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha in January 1963. While there, he met Beulah Cleveland. Langdon received his degree in Business in July, and also on July 28, 1963, he married Beulah in a beautiful wedding in her hometown of Marshall, Minnesota. The couple enjoyed a one week honeymoon at a resort in Park Rapids, Minnesota. They then drove to Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, where Langdon graduated from the Army Finance School. In September, Langdon went to Vietnam for a one year assignment at U.S. Advisor to the Vietnamese Army, and he was stationed in Da Nang.After Vietnam, Langdon was assigned as Army Advisor to the South Dakota National Guard. He had varied statewide travels, and when it was necessary to use his own car, Beulah was able to travel with him. Next, Langdon attended the Command and the General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Langdon's last assignment with the Army was at Fort Shafter, Hawaii.In Longmont, Langdon operated an antique shop and art gallery, and he and his wife served luncheons at Candlelight House. He enjoyed a lifetime interest in studying United States coins and stamps. A longtime member of the Boulder Stamp Club, Langdon served as president for two terms. He was also an avid sportsman. Among other interests, he was a volunteer in arranging the antique shows for the St. Vrain Historical Society, served on the Planning and Zoning Commission and was a Rotarian.Langdon was preceded in death by his parents, his brother John Richard Morton and John's wife Irene; two nephews, John Richard Morton, Jr. and Thomas Morton. Langdon is survived by Beulah, his loving wife of 51 years, a nephew, Scott Morton, a grand nephew, Charles Morton and his wife Shannon; two grand nieces, Brenda and Shawna Morton; two great-grand nieces, Stella and Isla Morton, a niece-in-law, Charlotte Morton, a cousin Dan Morton and his wife Ava; a sister-in-law, Carole Cleveland Hayden.Cremation has been entrusted to Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory.
