Lewis Belden Sperry Jr.

Lewis “Belden” Sperry, Jr., age 70, passed away peacefully, Thursday, August 20, 2026, at home with his wife and sons at his side. Belden was born November 23, 1955 in Pueblo, Colorado, to Lewis Belden Sperry (deceased) and Mervlyn Kahaunaele (deceased). He proudly lived in Vineland, Colorado until moving to Longmont, Colorado in November of 2025. He married his wife of 45 years, Debra Lee Sperry (Biby), on June 27, 1981. Together they have two sons, BJ and Kory, who became his reason for everything. Belden was an always present and adoring father-in-law to Sara Sperry (married to BJ) and Judi Sperry (married to Kory). Six lucky grandkids knew and loved him as, Pops: Saraye (12), Axel (10), Steele (2), and Lennyx (2 weeks) children of BJ and Sara; and Duke (11) and Porter (6) children of Kory and Judi. Belden was brother to Lynette Stecklein (Larry), Leilani Osleson (Curt) and Maile Ortiz (Chris), brother-in-law to Dennis Biby (Carol) and Doug Biby (Lisa), uncle to numerous nieces and nephews, friend and golfing buddy to many and a special family member, Gary Spaccamonti.

After graduating Pueblo County High School Belden began work at CF&I in the blast furnace. He continued working at the steel mill through new ownership as a wire drawer for over 35 years. Belden then worked at GCC cement plant as a heavy equipment operator before retiring in 2020.

Raising and coaching his sons was the joy of his life. Some of their earliest memories are of watching him play softball and shagging his home run hits. He also played football for the Pueblo Crusaders. Sports became a way of life and immense bond between him and his boys. Belden coached both BJ and Kory in baseball and football from 2nd grade all the way through high school; both of his sons becoming lifelong athletes because of his knowledge and guidance. Belden continued coaching football at Pueblo County High School until 2017, impacting hundreds of athletes.

Belden was a devoted husband, creating a beautiful home and backyard oasis with Deb. Transforming their yard into a basketball court, baseball diamond, football field, and 4 wheeler track for the boys and finishing with a lush tropical garden and forest for Deb. Tinkering and building in his garage, creating sculptures and creatures for his family, was a favorite way to spend his time. He especially loved working on his cars- a ’55 Chevy, ’56 Ford and ’58 Corvette. Together Belden and Deb traveled the States watching their sons’ games, primarily football. Attending every game gave him immense pride- always having feedback to share with them afterwards.

Outside of coaching, Belden loved camping and fishing. Camping at Taylor Reservoir twice a year with his family became a tradition so special that it will forever be a favorite place for all of them. He loved attending as many car shows as possible, welding yard art, serving beer at Runyon Field, making homemade root beer, golfing, and being surrounded by his sons, three grandsons and three granddaughters. His presence as a husband, father and grandfather, “Pops”, cannot be overstated. There was never a moment or game missed, he was simply always there.

A celebration of life will be held at Pueblo County High School. In lieu of flowers or gifts, please make a donation in his memory to Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers through Ray of Hope Cancer Foundation.
