

Mahlon (Mick) Samuel Miller, Jr.August 27, 1923 - March 1, 2007Mick Miller of Lyons, a long time Boulder resident and dentist, passed away March 1st, surrounded by family.A member of the ?Greatest Generation,? he was the son of Mahlon Miller, Sr. and Guila Younger Miller, and was born in Lafayette, Indiana. He had a younger sister (Virginia) who died as a child. He lived in several mid-west towns growing up, and attended high school in Cherokee, Iowa. While in high school, he lettered in wrestling, football, basketball, and track. He was the state champion in the football throw event, setting a state record of 100 yards that still stands today. Prior to graduation, he joined the Army Air Corps, where he flew 35 combat missions in B-17s during World War II. One of the planes he flew in was the Bobbi Anne, named by his flight crew in honor of his future bride. While serving in the Army Air Corps he was awarded numerous medals including the Bronze Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, and the Purple Heart.Upon returning from the war, he attended the University of Iowa where he was a varsity wrestler, and earned a B.S. in Chemistry, as well as Doctorate in Dental Surgery. He married Barbara Hoglan, his high school sweetheart on August 9, 1946, and moved to Boulder in 1956, where he began a dental practice that lasted 50 years.He was a member of the Boulder Rotary Club and Optimists, and a founder of the Boulder Pony League baseball program. He also volunteered countless hours for the Boulder County Sheriff?s Office, the Longmont Police Department, and the Longmont Holiday Creek Walk. He served as President of the Boulder Country Club, President of the Boulder County Dental Society, and was honored with a Fellowship in the American College of Dentists. He also was appointed by Colorado Governors John Love and Dick Lamb to the Colorado State Board of Dental Examiners, and was later elected to the Regional Board of Dental Examiners, acting as President. He served as a Commander in the Naval Reserve, and was a regional Blue and Gold officer for the U.S. Naval Academy.He is survived by his four sons, Mike (wife Tere) of San Diego, Scott (wife Lisa) of Superior, Tim (wife Sandy) of Littleton, and Kyle (wife Elise) of Lyons, seven grandchildren, and one great grandson. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, and with Barb, his bride of 58 years. He loved fishing, and especially enjoyed his many hours on the golf course. His family will always remember the hundreds of sporting events he attended to watch his sons and grandchildren, his frequent trips to the grocery store combined with his passion for cooking, his gentle smile, his work ethic, and his love for his wife and family.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Boulder and Broomfield Counties, 2594 Trailridge Drive E., Lafayette, 80026. An open house celebration of his life will be held at the Boulder Country Club on March 18 from 1:00 to 4:00.
