Martha Marie Snider was a beacon of dedication and love in her family and community, and she passed away peacefully on January 3, 2024. Born on January 17, 1924, in Troy, Tennessee, to Sidney Fay Snider and Onna Ellis Sturgis, Marie’s early years were shaped by the values of hard work and commitment to her family. Her academic diligence led her to graduate as the salutatorian of Troy High School’s class of 1941.
Marie’s work ethic was evident from a young age when, after graduating high school, she worked at the county superintendent’s office. When World War II started, she served her country with distinction as the chief clerk at the local ration board. There, she met lifelong friends and solidified her singular focus of helping others unconditionally.
Following the war, Marie continued to support her family by transitioning to a career at the Old & Third National Bank in Union City, Tennessee. Her acumen for numbers and her adaptability helped her become, first, a bookkeeper and then a teller, and by the time she retired, she had worked for many years as the bank’s auditor.
Marie’s faith was a cornerstone of her life. She was an Elder and a member of the Session’s Governing Board at the Union City Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and she sang for many years in the church’s choir.
She expressed her artistic flair through needlework. Marie’s needlepoint, cross-stitch, appliqué, and pieced quilts were not just hobbies but testaments to her meticulousness and creativity.
As the matriarchal figure of her family, Marie, in her gentle way, modeled selflessness and generosity. She is lovingly remembered by her sister, Macie Jean Miller; nieces, Mari Hobkirk (Joseph Andregg) and Lori Hobkirk (Tom Hanson); and grand-nephew, Carter Hanson. Her final years were spent in Longmont, Colorado, close to her sister and her nieces’ families, after living for nearly a century in Western Tennessee, where her reputation of kindness and intelligence will be cherished for a long time.
As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, we carry on lessons of her big-heartedness, of showing genuine interest in others, and of never judging or directing others’ lives.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Marie’s honor to the Union City Cumberland Presbyterian Church. A celebration of Marie’s life will be held later in the spring or summer.
