He married Marlys Dressler on March 19, 1959. While working full time as an auditor for the State of Minnesota he returned to school, attending William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, as well as serving in the US Air Force Reserves.
Marty practiced law for a number of years in St. Paul and then went on to act as General Counsel for several large insurance companies in California. Looking to fill his adventurous spirit he joined his brother Tom and founded True Value Hardware in Longmont. They owned and operated the store from 1972 to 1982. He then joined the firm Hopp and Associates, returning to the practice of law from 1983 to 1993.
A gifted and competitive athlete, he played youth hockey in Minnesota qualifying one season for a tournament played at Madison Square Garden. He enjoyed racquetball and handball and participated in the Longmont Senior League volleyball and softball teams. The softball team qualified for a number of national tournaments and won the National Senior Softball World Series in 2005.
He is survived by his wife Marlys of Longmont, his daughters Lisa Weeks (Greg Sendek) and Susan Knapp (Gary) of Loveland, his brother Tom Joyce of Longmont, grandchildren Ashleigh and Megan Knapp and Betsy, Sarah and Mary Weeks and great granddaughter Pearl, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who called him “Uncle Jim” and his brothers and sisters-in-law in Minnesota. Martin was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, Greg Weeks.
He was proud of his Irish-Scottish heritage and lived it in life to the fullest. His greatest joys were the women in his family and his sons-in-law. He will be sadly missed for his dimples, smile, laughter, sense of humor and wit.
