Mary Gertrude Fittje

Mary G. Fittje, 75, of Grand Junction, CO, formerly of Longmont, died August 26, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, CO. She was born December 11, 1938 in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska to Stanley and Hazel (Furby) Walker. On May 5, 1957 she married Virgil Robert Fittje in Grand Island, Nebraska. The family moved to Longmont in 1962 and Mary moved to Grand Junction in 2013.

While living in Longmont Mary was a member of First Lutheran Church, and was also active with the Women’s Auxiliary, American Legion Post 32, where she’d served as both an Officer and Chaplain. She’d also worked for the Public Service Company.

First and foremost to Mary were her family. She will be remembered as a loving Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother and will be dearly missed by all.

Survivors include her children: Stephen (Lou) Fittje of Goldendale, WA, Denise Fittje of Longmont, CO and Michael Fittje of Grand Junction, CO, 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She is further survived by her brothers Rod (Rebecca) Walker of Colorado Springs, CO and Fred Walker of Grand Island, NE and her sister Georgia Claussen of Grand Island, NE, her brothers in law Lewis Fittje of Omaha, NE and Dale Smith of Sterling, CO. She was preceded in death by her husband.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. (today) Thursday, August 28 at the Howe Mortuary in Longmont. Services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 29, 2014 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Longmont. Burial will follow at Foothills Gardens of Memory.
