She was born June 10th 1925 in Washington, DC to Aubrey “AP” and Mabel (Jones) Johnson. Mary Lee grew up in Baltimore, Maryland and lived there until attending the University of Maryland, a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority, where she received her degree. After college she joined the USO and spent several years in Europe. She had many roles in this position, one of her favorites as a tour guide for the famous Neuschwanstein Castle near Fussen, Bavaria. Eventually her travels led her to Aberdeen, Maryland where she met her future husband, Robert Bertelson. Robert and Mary Lee were married in January 1960 and settled in Kettering, Ohio to raise a family. Mary Lee went on to become a patient advocate at the Dayton Mental Health Center, a position she held until her retirement.
Mary Lee was preceded in death by her husband Robert, her parents Aubrey “AP” and Mabel Johnson, and her grandson Leon. She is survived by her son Tom, her two grandchildren Ethan and Jessica, and five great-grandchildren.
