Mike was born October 12, 1957, in Dubuque, Iowa, and was raised on a farm with his brother and sisters. Growing up in the Midwest helped shape him into the caring, helpful, and hardworking person we all knew and loved.
He was very proud of his service in the United States Army before going on to work for several companies, eventually retiring from Seagate Technologies.
Mike had a passion for trains and anything that went with them. He enjoyed railfanning, railroad photography, collecting trains/ railroad memorabilia, and watching the Minnesota Vikings. He also spent time custom building models and putting together model trucks and planes, building an impressive collection over the years.
More than anything, Mike loved his family. His grandchildren meant the world to him, and he made the most of every chance he had to be with them. You rarely saw Mike without him showing pictures of his grandkids or talking about them. He loved his dogs too and always had a soft spot for them.
Mike was the kind of person who could talk to anyone. He truly had the gift of gab and never had a problem striking up a conversation—with anyone. More often than not, he had to be pulled away just to end one. It seemed like his goal was to meet as strangers and leave as friends. If someone needed help, he was there. He genuinely enjoyed helping people whenever he could.
He is survived by his wife, Liz Spahn; his daughter, Mackenzie Spahn; his son, Devin Spahn (Katie); his sisters, Sheila Spahn and Suzanne Burke; and his grandchildren, Jamison Spahn, Nixon Spahn, and Ophelia Spahn.
Services will be held on April 22 at 11:00 a.m. at Howe Mortuary, located at 439 Coffman St, Longmont, CO 80501.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his name to Wounded Warrior Project at woundedwarriorproject.org.
