

Michael “Wally” H. Martens, 66, of Longmont died May 2, 2017. He was born in Elgin, Illinois, on July 29, 1950, the eldest son of Laverne and Bernice (Schroeder) Martens. He graduated from Barrington High School in 1968, and attended the Illinois Institute of Technology where he studied Architecture.
He moved to Colorado in 1972, where he started working for the City of Denver. Michael had a long career working for various public institutions as a Construction Project Manager. These included the Boulder Valley Schools, University of Northern Colorado, the University of Colorado – Boulder, and most recently, Thompson Valley School District.
In 1981, Michael married Linda (Jorgensen) Martens. In 1986, Michael and Linda welcomed their daughter Emily Martens, and in 1989, their son Andrew Martens.
Michael had a passion for Cubs baseball, music, photography, architecture and the outdoors. He spent several years living in the mountains, between Chief Hosa and Steamboat Springs.
In recent years, Michael invested most of his time to photographing live music. He volunteered his time to several radio stations, photographing musicians at Red Rocks, the Boulder Theater, and several venues across Colorado. His passion was the Blues, and he found a unique family of friends in the Colorado Blues Society.
He is preceded in death by his father, Laverne, his mother, Bernice, and his beloved sister Joy Dowling (Martens). He leaves behind his wife Linda, his daughter Emily, and son Andrew.
A memorial service will be held at Howe Mortuary on May 12, 2017 at 2pm, followed by a Potluck Celebration of Life from 4:00PM- 8:00PM at the family home (1518 Elmhurst Dr. Longmont, CO). Please bring a side or dessert to share. Entrees and drinks will be provided.
This is a casual-dress affair. Cubs gear encouraged.
