

Mildred Basta Osborne of Longmont died June 12, 2010 at Longmont United Hospital. She was 88.Mildred was born on October 22, 1921 in Pueblo to Vaso Basta and Mary Rodmonovich Basta. She grew up in Pueblo helping with the various chores on the family farm. Mildred would meet Claude Loren Osborne through various dances in the Longmont area. The couple would marry on April 27, 1940 in St. Francis, Kansas and begin a life in Longmont.Mildred began a career with Great Western Sugar Company. Here she was responsible for testing various farms sugar beets for the quantity and sugar content in the testing labs at GW. She would later join her husband as owner/operator of Western Fertilizer and Chemical Company. After the Osborne's sold their business, Phillips Petroleum hired them to manage the business, which they continued for a number of years.She and Claude enjoyed their time together and spent many weekends and vacations camping and fishing in many campsites in the western US. They included their children and grandchildren and special friends on these expeditions. She later took an interest in golf, playing in the Sunset Women's League and at Haystack Mountain Golf Course. She enjoyed her time being with her grandchildren, intently listening to their stories of life and provided support and direction in their decisions.Preceding her in death are her husband; and three brothers Mike, Dan and George Basta.Surviving are her daughter Barbara Ottaway of Denver; two sons Ronald (Pam) Osborne and Gary (Janet) Osborne both of Longmont; four sisters Pearl Hobson of Garden City, Kansas, Helen (Harry) Johns of Longmont and Violet Hartnagle and Diane Silbaugh both of Mead; 5 grandchildren Kurt Ottaway of Denver, Heather Ottaway of Oakland, California; Troy (Amy) Brumley of Denver, Rhett Osborne of Ft. Collins and Tyson Osborne of Denver. Two great grandchildren Jack and Sophie Brumley of Aurora further survive her.A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m, Thursday, June 18 at the Howe Mortuary.Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 18 at the Howe Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Merlene Barner officiating.Interment will follow at the Longmont Mountain View Cemetery.Contributions may be made to the Children's Hospital Foundation, 13123 East 16th Avenue, Box 045, Aurora, CO 80045
