After more than 50 years of marriage and a full life together, Morgan and Charlotte Benedict reached the end of their journeys on this Earth a mere ten days apart from one another. When Morgan felt that he was nearing the end, he said that he would wait here for Charlotte before continuing on to heaven, and in a bittersweet twist of fate, he didn’t have long to wait. Morgan and Charlotte were devoted spouses, parents, and grandparents, and both were devoted Christians to the end of their days.
Morgan was the oldest son of Drexel and Dorothy Benedict. He grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa with his brother Doug, fascinated by trains and his Dad’s job at Collins Radio. After high school, he studied at Iowa State University, where he earned his Bachelors and Masters degrees in English.
Charlotte was the oldest child and only daughter of Harold and Eloise Anderson. She grew up on a small farm in Richmond, Illinois, where she helped her mom raise her brothers. Charlotte was an excellent athlete, and studied at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where she earned her Bachelors degree in Physical Education while excelling at swimming, field hockey, and marching band. The two began teaching at a high school in Iowa, where the first met. Together they were eager to see the mountains, and so they took teaching jobs in the St Vrain Valley School district in Boulder County, Colorado. For the next 10 years, they taught during the school year and spent their summers on road trips from Alaska to Death Valley. Their sons Daniel and David temporarily interrupted those activities in 1979 and 1982. Then in 1986, the family moved to Eugene, Oregon so Charlotte could pursue an advanced degree at the University of Oregon. During that time, Morgan began working on his life’s mission, teaching grammar in 3 dimensions, and he was ultimately awarded a patent for his new approach to “information shapes.” His work continued until his death, and even now he has a second patent pending.
Morgan retired from teaching in 1998, and spent the rest of his life working on his beloved farm. Charlotte pursued her career as a teacher for nearly the rest of her life. She taught at Northeast Junior High (now Heritage Middle School), Sunset Middle School, coached swimming at Skyline High School, and worked as a substitute teacher after her retirement. With her unflagging energy and love of the outdoors, she also worked for Larimer County at the Carter Lake office, and she ran her own horse boarding business until her death.
Morgan and Charlotte are survived by their two sons and six grandchildren. Their grandsons all inherited Charlotte’s athleticism, and both Morgan and Charlotte loved to watch them play football, baseball, and wrestling. When their two granddaughters came along five years ago, both Morgan and Charlotte fell instantly in love. Daniel, his wife Bailey, their daughter Annelyse and their son Cole live in The Woodlands, TX. David, his wife Amy, their three sons Ty, Brock, and Sage and their daughter Grace live in Centennial, Colorado. Both Daniel and David can be reached on Facebook for more information.
