After nearly 101 1/2 years of being a blessing on this earth, Betty went home to be with Jesus forever. She was born Nora Elizabeth in Velva, N.D. to Elmer and Mamie (Hays) Ross. She was raised on the farm along with her 2 younger brothers. She attended Surrey H.S. until 10th grade before graduating from Minot H.S. She went on to graduate from Trinity hospital in Minot in 1938 and became a registered nurse.Betty worked in Washington State before accepting a civil service nursing appointment to the Veteran's hospital in West L.A. in 1940. There she met and married Tony Lurgio in Nov, 1941. They welcomed their son, Ross into the world July 1943, four months before Tony was drafted into the Army. Betty and Ross moved to Hillsboro, Oregon to be closer to her parents who had relocated from N.D. After serving in WWII, Tony was discharged in Dec. 1945. Their daughter, Gail was born in 1949.She worked in hospitals and doctor's offices, as a private duty nurse, in public health and for 17 years as a school nurse in Tigard schools until retirement in 1976. Even after retiring she never ceased to be a devoted caregiver.Betty and Tony loved to travel and visit family and friends. Some highlights were; a trip to Europe, a wedding in Hawaii. and visiting the Holy Land in 1999. She was a longtime, active member of Hillsboro Christian Church and welcomed warmly by Life Bridge Christian Churchafter moving to Longmont, Colo. in 2009. It was a very tough move as she was no longer able to remain in the home she and Tony built in 1949 and she could be closer to her daughter and family. She was a part of the Magnificent 7 writing group and participated in numerous church activities and Bible Studies. She loved the Lord and most all of his creation (exceptions like slugs, moles and weeds). She enjoyed children, knitting and crocheting, reading, birds, animals, the beach and the mountains, playing pinochle, and visiting and loving her friends and family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tony, son Ross and her brother Lee (Esther) Ross. She is survived by her daughter, Gail (Jim) Bowden of Longmont, her brother Glenn(Millie) Ross of Hillsboro, daughter in law Susan Lurgio of N.H., 7 grandchildren, Scott(Andrea) of N.H., Jeremy(Caroline) of Montana, Jon(Amanda) of Calif., Becky, Sara(Nate), and Adam of N.H. and Travis of Longmont; 5 great grand children, nephews; Dan, Gary(Vicki), Dave, and Randy(Susie) Ross all of Oregon; 2 stepgranddaughters, Nancy Nadonly and Kathy Vaughan and 2 step great grandsons, and Many dear friends including Hazel Drake of Hillsboro and Lynell Reed of Longmont.A very special thanks to Dr. VanHook and his staff who were always there for Betty and her caring, devoted caregiver, Dodie.
