Ray Eugene Elliss, passed away September 19, 2024 at the age of 82. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. After a long and difficult journey with Parkinson’s and several strokes, Ray is no longer suffering.
Ray was born on June 7, 1942 in Westphalia Kansas, on his family’s farm. He and his identical twin brother, Richard, grew up playing with their siblings and cousins on the family farm. Before they became teenagers the family moved to Mancos, CO. Ray often told stories about attending a one room schoolhouse and all of the adventures he had while living in Kansas. After the family moved to Mancos, Ray attended Mancos High School and played baseball and football for the Mancos Bluejays. When he was 17 years old, he enlisted in the Navy with his twin brother, Richard, under the Buddy Program. They joined their older brother, Jack, in the Construction Battalion. ( AKA The Fighting SeaBees) He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan and later Guam, USA. He met his wife of 59 years, Marcy while attending his twin brother’s wedding in Guam. They had their daughter, Sheryl in 1965 on Christmas day. Ray, Marcy and their daughter moved from the tiny island of Guam in 1967 when he began his lifelong career in the United States Postal Service. They briefly lived in New Mexico, Arizona and eventually Colorado. Ray worked his way from postal clerk, to Colorado Springs Maintenance Supervisor. Throughout his career, he was known for his hard work, dedication, and passion for helping others.
While working full time, Ray attended Devry Technical College and earned an Electrical Engineering Degree. More than anything, Ray was a devoted husband and father. He loved spending time with his daughter and grandchildren, sharing stories of his ancestors, playing games, and watching their favorite TV shows. He was always there to offer guidance, support, and encouragement, no matter what challenges they faced. After moving to Broomfield, to be closer to his daughter and her family, Ray welcomed four great grandchildren whom he loved dearly. Ray loved his wife with all of his heart. Their best memories were traveling and spending time together, especially in Kona, Hawaii.
In his younger years, during free time, Ray enjoyed fishing, hunting, working with his hands, spending time outdoors and was always eager to share his knowledge and enthusiasm with others. He was devoted to his family and loved unconditionally. Ray needed to only be near, and his calming presence would emanate warmth, love and Grace, incredibly, even with animals. His kindness and faith will transcend generations.
Ray is survived by his loving wife, Marcy, his daughter, Sheryl (Ed Kosorok), his grandchildren, Larrissa (Mike Mangione), Robert (Melinda Elliss), and great grandchildren Cooper Ray (Mangione), Molly (Mangione), Harlyn (Elliss), Beau (Elliss), brother and sister in-laws, and nieces and nephews. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him. We know in our hearts that Ray is at peace with the Lord and his identical twin.
