Richard Charles Essig, also known as Dick Essig, passed away on October 7, 2015. He was born on April 15, 1961 to Robert & Ethel (Sutherland) Essig in Denver, CO.Dick is survived by his wife Susan, daughters Katie and Maggie, mother Ethel Essig and two sisters, Cindy Duff-Tapp and Kathy Essig.He graduated from East High School where he was a member of the Boy Scouts and the All-State Band, playing baritone. He graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was a highly valued employee at Bestop, Inc. for 30 years as a product engineer. An inventor at heart, Dick was responsible for numerous patents and devised many innovative products for off-road vehicles that literally can be seen everywhere. Dick married Susan Kintzley at the King of Glory Lutheran Church in Loveland, CO on March 3, 1989.With help from friends and family, Dick built a wonderful home with ponds, gardens and wonderful open space west of Berthoud for his wife and daughters Katie and Maggie Essig. He was extremely talented, completing almost the entire exterior and interior of the home himself.Dick could always be found in his shop working on rebuilding (and improving!) jeeps, his trusty dirt bike and off-road vehicles and campers. Dick loved designing and building his own furniture and built two authentic tepees in his backyard.Dick was a true outdoorsman. He was an excellent hunter, fisherman, hiker and backwoodsman. He was involved in Scouting as a young man and climbed many mountains and camped out all over Colorado and the West. He loved the outdoors and spent as much time as possible in the mountains. Dick was avid about 4-wheeling with Sue and friends and was a great friend to his buddies. He'll be remembered for numerous epic trips to the North Sand Dunes, the Canyonlands of Utah and 4 wheel drive roads all over the state.Dick loved his two daughters and participated in many of their activities. Dick and Sue worked together on many projects throughout all the years.Everyone agrees that Dick died way too soon and his death was quite a shock to all who knew him. He will be sorely missed!A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, October 24, 2015 at Ryssby Church. A Celebration of Life reception will be held at the family home, 5512 Beverly Dr., Berthoud, CO 80513, following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dick Essig Memorial Fund in c/o Ahlberg Funeral Chapel.
