

Dr. Richard E. Hargreaves, DVM, of Longmont, Colorado, died Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at Life Care Center of Longmont. He was 87 years old.Dick was born April 24, 1919 in Hayward, California, to Frank Charles and Mary Agnes (Edwards) Hargreaves. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Utah and then to Sterling, Colorado. Dick ran track in high school and won the state championship in the high hurdles as a junior. After graduating from high school in 1937, Dick was awarded a Boettcher Scholarship, which allowed him to attend the veterinary school at Colorado A&M (now Colorado State University). He continued to run track, played basketball and was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. After graduating from the veterinary program, he enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1942 and rose to the rank of Captain before his honorable discharge in 1946.Dick married Jo Moore in Lubbock, Texas in 1944. They made their home in Longmont in 1946 but later divorced. On February 21, 1970, Dick married Laura Williamson Foster in Longmont.Dr. Hargreaves co-owned the Animal Hospital in Longmont along with Dr. Bill Harrison for over 35 years. Upon retiring in the mid-1980s, he continued to provide spaying and neutering services at the Longmont Humane Society. He was a member of the St. Vrain Rotary, the Prestige Club, and had attended Congregational United Church of Christ. He enjoyed playing golf, watching sports, and adored his grandchildren. He was a talented gardener, growing many varieties of flowers and vegetables. Dick and Laura enjoyed traveling and were able to visit much of the United States, the Panama Canal, and England.Survivors include his wife, Laura Hargreaves of Longmont; three daughters, Laurel McLean and her husband, Jerry, of Denver, Dorothy Stout and her husband, Robert, of Colorado Springs, and Leslie Reid and her husband, Kelvin, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; three stepsons: Charles Foster and his wife, Felice, of Longmont, Chris Foster of Longmont, and David Foster of Denver; a stepdaughter, Nancy Liebing of Longmont; a sister, Mary Lou Lindbloom and her husband, Jack, of Phoenix, Arizona; 14 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents and by an infant brother.Memorial services will be held on Friday, November 10, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church. Reverend Steve Berke will officiate. Inurnment will be at Longmont Mountain View Cemetery.
