Richard W. Newton

NEWTON, Richard W. 69, of Longmont, passed away June 20, 2013 from brain cancer which was diagnosed in October of 2012.Rich was born October 9, 1943 in Winterset, IA to Wayne and Pauline (Frey) Newton. He graduated from Winterset High School. As a young boy his family spent many summers vacationing in Colorado in Big Thompson Canyon.He served in the US Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Oklahoma. During his college years he interned as an athletic trainer with the Miami Dolphin's. After graduating he accepted a position with the University of Colorado as an athletic trainer. He married Donna Frutiger in December of 1993 and resided in Longmont, CO.He was employed by IBM until his retirement when he started spending winters in Apache Junction, AZ.Rich loved all sports, especially the University of Colorado Buffalos and the Colorado Avalanche where he attended the winning game 7 of the Stanley Cup in 2001, Rockies baseball, Nascar and the Tour De France. He enjoyed skiing and did so for many years with friends and family. Rich was a collector of Hopi Indian art and had many friends which he held most dear. He stayed connected to his family and friends in Winterset and enjoyed going back home. You could take him out of Iowa, but you couldn't get Iowa out of Rich.He was preceded in death by his parents.He is survived by his wife, two brothers, Robert (Elaine), Keith (Mary Kay), a son Jeff in CA., three step children, Troy, Evvy (Jeff Nichols), and Tracy Frutiger, three nieces, two nephews, three grandchildren, two step grandchildren, three grand nephews, one grand niece and several cousins. Interment will be at a later date in Winterset, IA and in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery at Van Meter, IA.An open house in celebration of Rich's life will be held Saturday, June 29th at the Schlagel St. home of Donna and Rich, from 4 pm until 9 pm.Memorials: Please make a donation to the charity of your choice.www.ahlbergfuneralchapel.com to share condolences.
