Bob was born in Chicago, Illinois, the second of three sons of Ivan W. Johnson and Caroline Paur Johnson. In his early years, his mother contracted cancer and passed away when Bob was seven years old. His father subsequently married a Polish immigrant widow, Marie Brunscek. Marie, a Holocast survivor, became the mother of three sons and was a loving, but strict, disciplinarian.
Bob lived in various parts of the country because of his father’s frequent job transfers. He served in the Army National Guard during the Vietnam era and finally received a bachelor’s degree in history from George Mason University after a lengthy college career.
Bob attended Woodstock in August 1969, a fact of which he never tired of talking about. He drove his little green Sunbeam Alpine convertible to Yasgur’s Farm…and, in the Woodstock movie, there is a second or two of the footage that shows Bob sitting on the trunk of his car while a friend is driving.
Bob moved to Boulder, Colorado in 1979 and worked various jobs until he got a foothold in the burgeoning tech industry. He sold electronic components for a number of distributors and manufactures over the next several years.
In 1982, he met his future wife Sandy on a blind date set up by a mutual friend. Since neither was keen to spend an evening with a possible mismatch, the date was set for breakfast on a Sunday morning. Their second date was Sunday night. They were married two and a half years later on May 11, 1985.
They enjoyed skiing, mountain biking, golfing, bowling, four wheeling, hiking, camping and traveling in their camper.
After living in Louisville, Colorado for 9 years, Bob and Sandy bought a fixer upper in rural Berthoud in 1992. Their previous love of outdoor recreation was channeled into fixing up the property. It was a labor of love and money. After 25 years, it was finally finished to their satisfaction, only to be sold two years later as Bob’s health began to decline.
The couple moved to their present home on Cuda Court in Berthoud in 2020. Bob enjoyed the frequent parties and camaraderie that became a part of life on Cuda Ct. His wry sense of humor never failed to elicit a laugh.
Because of his advancing Parkinson’s and dementia, Bob was moved into memory care in August 2023.
Bob is survived by his wife, Sandy Buss Johnson, his step-daughter, Amy Barry (David Wolfer), his brother Kenneth Johnson (Colleen) and various nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother David Johnson.
A celebration of life for Bob will be held Saturday, May 11, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at his home, 2031 Cuda Court, Berthoud, Colorado 80513.
Memorial contributions in Bob’s memory, may be made to Mountain States Children’s Home, 14780 N. 107th St. Longmont CO 80504.
Cremation is entrusted to Howe Mortuary & Crematory of Longmont, Colorado.
