Bob was born March 14, 1937 in Detroit, Michigan the only son of Oscar D. and Rose (Steckel) Hajek. The family moved to Longmont in 1951 and Bob went on to attend and graduate from Longmont High School, where he was on the football team, which won state championships in 1954 and 1955. He later graduated from Colorado State University. After graduation from college, Bob joined the Coast Guard Reserve and served his country as a “weekend warrior” for the next 7 years.
In 1961, Bob joined his father operating the Hajek Chevrolet/Olds dealership. When Oscar passed away in 1967, Bob was granted the opportunity to own the dealership, making him the youngest dealer in the nation at that time. Bob loved cars and thoroughly enjoyed his career. He was definitely a “hands on” owner and you could always find him on the showroom floor. He doted on his employees and customers alike. His children worked in the business from an early age and he was excited to have his sons join him in taking over the day to day operations during the past year.
On October 9, 1971 he married Sara Sue Goldner in Denver, Colorado. Bob and Susie enjoyed many experiences together over their almost 40 years of marriage. These included numerous trips abroad and ones here in the U.S.A. with family and friends. Their most joyous adventures, however, were the births and rearing of their three children. Bob’s devotion to his family was seen in his volunteer coaching of his children’s sports teams and in his attendance at all of their various sports events.
Bob’s other love, after that for his family and business, was golf. He was an active part of Fox Hill Country Club, serving on the first Board of Directors and on subsequent Boards for a number of years. He was instrumental in taking the club private, when the members purchased it from Phil Skrbina. Over the years, Bob enjoyed many golf trips with a multitude of “golf buddies”.
Bob was a constant supporter of many local causes in the Longmont community, including youth sports programs, Longmont United Hospital, the OUR Center and Mountain States Children’s Home, among others. He also sponsored the Oldsmobile Scramble Golf Tournament for many years.
Bob is survived by his wife Susie and his daughter Brooke (Mike) Baker of Thornton, CO and his sons Brett (Emily) and Bobby Hajek of Longmont, CO; his sister Marilynn Hajek of Longmont; and 4 grandchildren, Andrew and Alyssa Baker and Carter and Cayden Hajek. He was preceded in death by his parents.
