

Exâ?detective, liquor store owner, Boulder native dead at 95Former Boulder police detective and liquor store owner Roy Hendricks diedSaturday, December 13, 2008, of natural causes at the age of 95.Hendricks, who served on the Boulder Police Force for 15 years, worked on some ofthe city's most notorious cases. He was instrumental in solving the murder caseof the ""Babyâ?faced Bludgeoner"" in 1957 and the Officer Ray McMaster murder in1958. Hendricks was also the last living detective who worked on the 1954 ""JaneDoe"" murder case, which in recent years has been the subject of an ongoing effortto identify the victim. He was written about in the book ""Beyond the Badge"" whoseauthor said his death ""marks the end of an era.""After leaving the department in 1962, Hendricks opened OK Liquor on 28th Street,which he owned until retiring in 1983. He was a lifelong member of the BoulderElks Lodge and ran a small ""hobby"" farm north of the Boulder airport. He lovedplaying cards with friends at the Elks Lodge and the American Legion.During World War II, Hendricks won a battle commission of second lieutenant inGermany while fighting with General Patton's Army. He was awarded the Bronze Starmedal and several major combat stars. He served with the tank destroyer companyof the 87th Infantry Division.Hendricks was born in Boulder on June 3, 1913. He was the son of John William andEdith Henderson Hendricks. He was preceded in death by his brothers, BurtonHendricks and William C. Hendricks and his sister, Myrtle Hendricks.Survivors include his former wife, Irma Hendricks of Green Valley, Arizona; theirson, Ronnie Hendricks of Kaysville, Utah, and his longâ?time companion and friend,Betty Kern of Boulder. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Benjamin J.Hendricks of Washington, D.C., and Hannah J. Hendricks of Kaysville, Utah; anddaughterâ?inâ?law, Sheree Josephson Hendricks.A public viewing will be Thursday from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Boulder ElksLodge, 3975 28th Street in Boulder. A memorial will be held at 1:30 p.m. Agraveside service will follow at the Valmont Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, thefamily asks that you make a donation to a charity of your choice.
