Sandy Powers-DeCino was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, the youngest of three daughters. Athletic and spirited from a young age, she competed in gymnastics through high school. During her sophomore year at Niwot High School, Sandy proudly portrayed the school’s cougar mascot, a role that reflected her fun-loving and energetic personality. She later graduated from Longmont High School in 1980.
Sandy earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation in 1984. Throughout her life, she worked in roles that reflected her love of people and community, including Parks and Recreation, assistant cheerleading coach, and retail. Most recently, she worked at Trendz in Estes Park, where her warmth, kindness, and genuine care for others left a lasting impression.
Sandy was more than a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, and friend — she went above and beyond in every role she held. As a wife and mother, she gave her whole heart, cherishing time with family and friends. After the loss of her husband, John Galbavy, in 2006, Sandy courageously embraced life as a single mother. She chose joy, lived with purpose, and poured herself into raising her children, mentoring them, and encouraging them to succeed.
In November 2017, Sandy married her best friend, Nick DeCino, beginning a new chapter of life in Estes Park, CO.
Sandy’s faith and love for God were profound and evident in everything she did. If she wanted her loved ones to know one thing, it would be this: she is Home, experiencing true life now with her Lord and Savior.
Sandy was preceded in death by her husband, John Galbavy, and her father, Lawrence G. Powers.
She is survived by her mother, Ida L. Powers; sisters Teri (Glenn) Dodson and Cheri Powers; her children Alyssa (Marshall) Johnson, with grandchildren Capriese, Braxton, and Everly; John Connor Galbavy; and Blake (Mica) Powers; as well as her niece and nephews, Alec Gee, Tori Gee, and Liam Gee, and Chris (Andrea) and Mckean Dodson.
A Celebration of Life for Sandy will be held Friday, January 16, at 11:00 a.m. at Howe Mortuary, 439 Coffman Street, Longmont, Colorado 80501.
Sandy will be remembered for her generous spirit, her strength, her unwavering faith, and the deep love she shared with all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Tunnels for Towers, and Honor Flight of Northern Colorado.
