Steve was born on July 1, 1950, to Lyle & Shirley (Gordon) McNulty in Rapid City, SD, although he spent most of his childhood in South Milwaukee. Steve was always active and loved outdoor sports of all kinds, including camping, fishing, hunting and archery.
Between Steve’s junior and senior year in high school, the family moved to Buffalo NY. Steve had one year in Buffalo before graduating from high school.
Anxious to be on his own after graduation, Steve got a job with the railroad. He lived in a trailer on an Indian Reservation in upper New York where, every night, he fell asleep to the sounds of Niagara Falls.
That’s where the Draft Board found him in 1969. He spent nineteen months in the Army, including time in Vietnam as ground support. He received numerous commendations, including three Purple Hearts. He received an honorable discharge in March, 1971.
After the service, Steve moved to Colorado and attended the University of Colorado. While at CU, he served in the ROTC. He graduated with a degree in Computer Science in 1978.
He worked for EDS, 1978-1980, and worked in Sales, Management and System Support at IBM and Leanin’ Tree, 1980-2008.
He married Janet (Schertz) in January, 1981, and they had two amazing daughters, Erin and Laura. They divorced in 1993.
Steve married his wife, Bonnie (Rhoads), April, 2001. Both employed by IBM, they retired on the same day, January 31, 2008, to begin their active retirement.
Always active, always smiling, always witty, and a great Jeopardy player (he would say “he has his smarty pants on!"") He had so many interests, including hot air balloon pilot, travel, scuba diving, archery, picture framing, playing guitar, and volunteering. He was a member of the Boulder County Community Corrections Board for over 25 years and he chaired the board for many of those years.
Steve is preceded in death by his mother, Shirley; father, Lyle; and brother, Kevin. Steve is survived by his wife, Bonnie; his daughter Erin and fiancé, Joe Westrich; his daughter Laura Olsbo and husband, Stosh Olsbo; four McNulty brothers, Mike, Sean, Dan and Tim; two sisters, Mary Belobraydish and Ann Panega; his former wife, Janet Beaver; and many other relatives and good friends.
The memorial service will be held on Friday, April 15, 2016, at 1:00 PM, at Howe Mortuary, 439 Coffman Street, Longmont, CO.
