Steven Lyle Jones was born November 1, 1951, in McCook, Nebraska to Kenneth L. and Jeannine C. Jones. Steve grew up in Curtis, Nebraska where he attended elementary school. In 1963, Steve’s family moved to Longmont, Colorado where he attended junior and senior high school. Steve graduated from Longmont High School in 1970 where he was an outstanding three sport athlete in high school lettering in football, basketball, and track. Steve was awarded a scholarship to play football at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas where he lettered each of his four years. He then attended the University of Northern Colorado where he graduated with a BS degree in biology and chemistry.
Following college he worked as a plant biologist for Great Western Sugar company.
Soon after he owned his own plumbing company where he became certified as a master plumber. In his past seventeen years, he worked as a master plumber in the pipe trade’s department at the University of Colorado.
Steve is best known to his fishing buddies and brother Mike as an outstanding outdoorsman especially in the discipline of walleye fishing. He owes a great deal of his fishing prowess to his father Ken who was an avid outdoorsman and thoroughly enjoyed taking his boys hunting and fishing. Steve, his father Ken, and brother Mike would chase walleyes all over the Midwest and into Canada. Steve and Mike traveled to Alaska two years ago where Steve caught an 85 pound halibut, and his daily limit of red, pink, chum, and coho salmon.
Steve and his mother who lived together since his father’s death shared a bond for the culinary arts; their love for cooking, and spending countless hours planning and preparing food for their family united them in a true bond of love and companionship.
Steve was preceded in death by his father Kenneth L. Jones, and sister Pamela Sue Stuchel. Steve will be dearly missed by his mother Jeannine Jones, Uncle Reginald (Bud) Phelps, brother Michael and his wife Marcia, his nieces Angela Gonzales and Marla Jones-Kenley and their families, and a long list of loyal friends and fishing buddies.
Memorial services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 7, 2011 at the Howe Mortuary Chapel with Chaplain Susan Palmquist of HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties officiating.
