Stewart Vernon Golden, 74, died September 1, 2014 while on vacation in Eugene, Oregon. Stewart was born on November 14, 1939 in Omaha, Nebraska to Vernon V Golden and Marjorie Mae Stewart Golden; Vernon was serving in the US Army at the time.
The Golden’s returned to Longmont, where Stewart attended local schools graduating from Longmont High School in 1957. While in high school he played on two state champion football teams and was a member of the school choir. He became a proficient musician by the age of 13. Throughout his life he enjoyed playing for various churches and numerous events and organizations. Stewart graduated from Colorado State University in 1962 with a degree in music education. While attending CSU Stewart met and married Sheron Garrett on July 22, 1962 in Englewood, Colorado. Shortly after graduating from college, he joined the United States Army and moved to Ft Huachuca Arizona to proudly serve. In 1965 he returned to Longmont and became an involved member of the Longmont community. Stewart joined his father, Vernon, in the ready mixed concrete, sand and gravel, and construction business. The Golden’s Companies grew and expanded as Longmont and Northern Colorado grew. He was quite proud that all of his children worked at the family business over the years. The family sold the business in 1999, but continued to contribute to the community in many ways.
Stewart was a lifetime member of First Christian Church (now LifeBridge) serving as the organist for 60 years. In addition, he was an Elder for 30 years and served in many capacities in the music department and throughout the church. The church and serving God was one of his greatest joys. He joined Barbershoppers and the Longmont Kiwanis Club in 1965; serving as President of both and Lieutenant Governor of Kiwanis and Director in the Barbershoppers. Stewart was actively involved in the Boulder County Fair Parade through Kiwanis and spent many years in charge of the judges stand and the parade line up. In 1998 he was honored as the Grand Marshall. He was a founding Board Member of the Longmont Community Foundation. He was actively involved in Longmont getting its own YMCA as opposed to being part of the Boulder Y and was Board Member and President of the Longmont YMCA in its early days. Stewart was awarded the Tom Brock Award in 2012 for community involvement, something he was extremely proud of. As a CSU Alumni he gifted to the University a Liturgical Organ Studies Chair for organ and religious and Church and Chapel performances. This will enable CSU to have an organ program in their music department in perpetuity.
Stewart was most proud of his family and often attending various sporting events and arts performances of his children and grandchildren. He always had a twinkle in his eye for each and every special one.
Surviving Stewart is his wife Sheron, children Reggie (Sarah) Golden, Lynn (Phil) Mitchell of Mansfield, Ohio, Suzie Ball (Jeff Kissner) and Jim Golden (Leslie Vera). Grandchildren Drew Golden (Taylor Fountain), Rex Golden, Stephen Mitchell, Melissa (Tom) Enyeart and daughter Lucy, Hope Mitchell, Olivia Mitchell, Karlee Ball, J.D. Ball, Ashley (Cody) Brooks and sons Caden and Greyson, and Brook Golden.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at LifeBridge Christian Church. Private interment will follow at Longmont Mountain View Cemetery. Contributions may be made to LifeBridge Christian Church, or the Longmont Community Foundation for music scholarships.
