Sue Ann Steger, 67, of Mead, Colorado died peacefully in her sleep on March 7, 2013. Sue had fought a courageous battle with ovarian cancer for over 10 years. During that time she was most active in helping other cancer patients cope with their illness while under the care of Dr. Maha Elkordy of Cancer Center of North Carolina. Dr. Elkordy became her friend. Sue and her husband Jim moved from North Carolina in May 2012 to be closer to their daughter Beth and husband John Gamber (Westminster) along with the loves of her life, her grandsons Kai and Jaid.
Sue was born February 12, 1946 in Denver. Soon after her family moved to California where she grew up and went to school before meeting her future husband Jim.
Jim and Sue were married in San Jose, California June 20, 1974. Immediately, they moved to the Colorado area where Jim worked in the high tech sector, which eventually led them to many years of travel and living abroad.
Sue lived her life to the fullest and never looked back. She never complained during her illness and never asked Why. She had opportunities to travel and lived abroad while husband Jim worked as at Expatriate in countries like Puerto Rico, Singapore, Thailand and China. While living abroad Sue enjoyed travel to Indonesia, South Korea, Bale, Australia, China, Malaysia, India, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Bangladesh. Sue became an avid collector of local art, furniture and Persian rugs and furnished her homes with exquisite pieces that she personally chose from dealers all over Asia. She made lifelong friends with all her acquaintances while living overseas. Her most memorable experiences were buying Persian carpets at auction at the Hyatt Hotel, Singapore or when she would take friends who visited her while living overseas to her own private tours of the country. She would seek out unique and diverse areas and people to visit with. The flower market in Bangkok Thailand was her favorite spot to just wander the endless streets and vendors. She visited, laughed and bought flowers just to help out the local vendors. Once when her daughter Beth was visiting Bangkok, Sue and Jim took her to the flower market only to have the vendors give Beth and Sue flowers just because “they were so beautiful”. In the end there was a trunk load of orchids, jasmine and roses to remind them of the evening. Truly memorable. She loved the people of Asia and the people of Asia loved Sue. Sue’s friends are the best quality that one could ask for. They ended up being friends for life.
Sue is survived by her husband Jim of 39 years, her daughter Beth (Westminster) John, her son-in-law along with her grandchildren Kai, Jaid, (Westminster) Ashley and Michael (St. Petersburg, FL). She is further survived by her sisters Sharon McDonald (Sparks, NV) and Jodi Kalman (Orange County, CA).
A visitation and memorial service to celebrate Sue’s life will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 11, 2016 at the Howe Mortuary Chapel, Longmont. Chaplain Loren Arienne Olds will be officiating. After the service everyone is invited to a light luncheon at the Event Room at Howe Mortuary. Cremation has been entrusted to the good people at Howe Mortuary, Longmont.
Jim has registered a star for Sue for all to remember her by. The name of the star is SUSI Q. It is registered in the Constellation of Aquarius at RA21h24m25.93 + 00 36’24.7 deg. at 11.0 magnification. You can leave Sue a personal message if you visit https:stars.osr.org/susi-q
In lieu of any donations, Sue requests that every female she knows or any husband, lover or friend spends the money on a CA125 blood test to detect any early sign of ovarian cancer. Her message to all is that the test is painless, yet so vital for life. If your doctor asks why you want this test explain to him/her you are just being cautious about your health. If your doctor refuses to give the test then Sue suggests that you change your doctor.
“If I had to do it all over again . . . I wouldn’t change a thing and I would never change my friends.”
Sue Steger.
