Susan Lucille Johnson, 83, died June 9, 2026. Born August 20, 1942, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Sue was the daughter of Lawrence Lee Anderson and Edith Caroline Anderson and the youngest of four children by ten years—cherished as the baby of the family, with two protective brothers and one sister. In 1946, the family moved to Boulder, Colorado, where Sue attended Whittier Elementary, Casey Junior High, and Boulder High School. From an early age, her spirit was marked by curiosity and a willingness to meet the world head-on.
Sue built a long and dedicated career as a facility manager for the Boulder Police Department, serving with steady diligence and a calm competence that others relied upon. She later retired from that role, leaving behind a reputation for being exceptionally organized and dependable, especially when circumstances demanded clear thinking and composure. Sue also took great pride in her membership in FEMA, including deployment to the front lines during Hurricane Ivan and Hurricane Katrina. She was responsible for managing the distribution center to get life saving supplies to the people who need them; work that reflected both courage and a deep sense of responsibility.
On May 11, 1962, Sue married Robert Earl Johnson at the 1st Christian Church in Boulder, Colorado. Together they had two children. Sadly, the older of the two boys did not survive past infancy. Later, they welcomed their second son, Robert Lawrence Johnson. Throughout her life, Sue’s devotion to family remained a guiding constant; she was always sure to put her son first. In later years, one of her greatest joys was being a grandma, a role she embraced with gentle steadiness and unwavering loyalty.
Sue’s life was also enriched by the things that brought her quiet satisfaction and happiness. She loved traveling, and her adventurous nature found expression in the places she went and the experiences she sought. She enjoyed working on puzzles, and those who knew her recognized a person who valued order, preparation, and doing things with care—often with a clear sense of how they ought to be done. Sue also held a special tenderness for animals and loved the many dogs and cats who were part of her life.
Sue is survived by her son, Robert (Laurie) Johnson, and her grandchildren Avery and Lainey Johnson.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence Lee and Edith Caroline Anderson; her ex-husband, Robert Earl Johnson; her siblings Nancy Snyder, Rollin "Red" Anderson, and Richard "Dick" Anderson; as well as her pets Lucky, Bo, and Mitts.
In lieu of flowers, Sue’s family requests donations be made to the American Red Cross in her name.
