Tom was born in Kingston, New York, on August 10, 1928, to Thomas and Frances McGrane. He married the love of his life, Marian Clark, on September 13, 1953, in Kingston. Together, they shared 67 wonderful years of marriage before Marian’s passing in November 2020.
An avid athlete from a young age, Tom played football, basketball, baseball and ran track during his high school years. He often remarked, “School would be boring without sports.” Following high school, Tom proudly served in the U.S. Army as a Paratrooper. His next adventure was working on the tugboats in New York Harbor and the Great Lakes. This time left him with fond memories and a love for boats and the outdoors.
As Tom settled into family life, he began his career with IBM in Kingston, where he was known as a dedicated employee and a kind, patient, and attentive father at home. In 1966, he accepted a transfer to IBM Boulder, relocating the family to Longmont—a move that marked the beginning of many cherished years in Colorado. Tom retired from IBM in 1983, after a long and fulfilling career.
Retirement didn’t slow Tom down. He filled his days with adventures and hobbies that brought him happiness. Whether traveling in his motor home to warm and beautiful destinations, boating and camping with grandchildren, or competing on the tennis court, Tom approached each days with energy and joy. He was also a skilled wood craftsman, known for building thoughtful projects for family members and friends and always fixing what needed fixing.
Above all, Tom cherished his role as "Pop." He never missed a concert, sporting event, or holiday with his grandchildren. He taught them how to swim, play tennis, work with their hands, and find satisfaction in fixing things — leaving a legacy not just of memories but of practical skills and a zest for life. His greatest act of love was caring for Marian in her later years, with the quiet devotion and steadiness that defined his character.
Tom was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marian McGrane, and his son, Thomas McGrane. He is survived by his son Bob (Barbara) McGrane of Berthoud, his daughter Michele (Joe) Moyer of Erie, grandchildren, Kristin Anderson, Kara (Bo) Felton, Jamie McGrane (Jeremiah George) and Tom McGrane and great grandchildren, Everly, Chloe and Quinn Anderson and Wesley and Wade Felton.
A funeral service for Tom will be held on Friday, August 29, 2025 at 12:30 p.m. at Howe Mortuary located at 439 Coffman Street, Longmont, Colorado 80501. Services in the gentle care of Howe Mortuary of Longmont.
