Thomas Allen Smith

Thomas Allen Smith, cherished husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2024, in Longmont, Colorado. He was 87 years old.

Tom was born on December 1, 1936, to Garland Dean and Ruth Estelle (Gifford) Smith in Wichita, Kansas. After graduating from high school in Edina, Missouri, Tom attended the University of Missouri where he earned his bachelor’s degree in agriculture. While attending college, he met the love of his life, Ferne Allene (McDonald) Smith. They were married in the campus chapel in November 1961.

Tom and Ferne welcomed their daughter, Elizabeth (Beth) Ann Smith, in January 1964 and the family eventually settled in Longmont in 1974. Tom worked in agricultural sales most of his career and later started his own company, Rocky Mountain Deck & Fence. He also served our nation in the U.S. Army (ROTC and Reserves) attaining the rank of Captain (Artillery).

He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish and travel. Tom also enjoyed collecting firearms, specializing in Colt Woodsmans, and loved attending regional gun collector’s shows. One of Tom’s deepest passions, however, was woodworking. He was known to spend hours in his shop making a variety of wooden treasures.

Tom will be fondly remembered as a humble, gregarious, and loving person who never met a stranger. A man of high moral character, he shared his wisdom with few words and gave selflessly to those he loved. Those who knew him will forever recall his lively stories of life growing up on his family’s farm in Missouri. He will be fondly remembered and dearly missed. His daughter and grandson take great pride in the fact that the most often used phrase they hear to describe Tom is "he was a good man."

In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his older brother, Gifford Smith, his younger sister, Georgia (Smith) Agner, and his wife, Ferne. He is survived by his daughter Beth and grandson Brian, both of Longmont, Colorado. A private memorial service will take place at a later date.
