Walter R. Maschmeyer

Walter R. Maschmeyer passed away peacefully May 20, 2018 at his home. He was 85 years old.Walter was born on February 8, 1933 in The Hague, Netherlands to Walter G. and Else Ellen (Kessel) Maschmeyer. He grew up in Germany during the Hitler Regime, where he experienced bombings and flight from the Soviet Army when they entered Germany.He graduated from High School in Germany and also attended the University of Mainz in Germany before coming to America and getting his degree in Psychology from the University of Houston.Walter served in the United States Army. On June 11, 1977 he married Nelda E. Palomeque. Together they moved to the Longmont area from Houston, TX in 1985.Walter was a Regional Manager for Lufthansa German Airlines in New Orleans, Houston, and Denver, before retiring in 1993.Walter was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He also served as president of the German American Trade Association and German American Chamber of Commerce in Denver. He was also the operations officer for the Louisiana Civil Air Patrol and was a member of the Boulder Elks club.Walter was a pilot flying both commercially and in a glider. He was a worldwide traveler and the author of his memoirs about Germany during WWII.Walter was preceded in death by his parents.He is survived by his wife Nelda; his daughter Nelda McAllister; his children with his first wife Angela Isaura Sarran, Ana Welch, Amado Maschmeyer, Angela (Nena) Maschmeyer and Rebeca Johanna Maschmeyer; his grandchildren Elisabeth, Moses, Grace and Maxwell McAllister, Kaitlyn, Mallory and Chandler Welch, Ana Elizabeth Lee, Andrew DiGiovanni, Alayna, Callie and Mia Maschmeyer, and Nena Ashley Alderman.Visitation 6:00-8:00 PM Wednesday May 23, 2018 at Walters home (please call Ahlberg Funeral Chapel 303-776-2313 for the address). Funeral service 10:00 AM Thursday May 24, 2018 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 200 2nd Ave, Lyons, CO 80540. Burial at Lyons Cemetery with military honors.
