William Floyd Spencer was born to Maybell Eldridge and Floyd Spencer on January 8, 1934, in Pryor Oklahoma. Bill, 92, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, September 19, 2026, with his beloved wife, Betty, by his side.
He is survived by his wife of over 71 years (together for 73); his daughter, Tina of White Sulphur Springs, MT; his special grandchildren, Katie (husband Luke) of Windsor, CO; and Kyle (wife Jen) of Windsor, CO; and his great-grandchildren: Brady, Carter, Lyvi Kingsley and Kinsley Salazar. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert, on March 1, 2022.
Bill joined the U.S. Navy in 1952, serving on the aircraft carriers USS Wasp and USS Boxer, assigned to Fighter Squadron VF-151 during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1956.
He worked at Rocky Flats for 35 years-starting as a janitor, completing a 4-year apprenticeship to become a machinist, advancing to Machine Shop Foreman, and ultimately serving as Building Manager for one of the largest buildings on the plant site. During his time as a machinist, he made an innovative contribution by developing a device known as "Spencer's Muncher," which helped revolutionize the development of the beryllium cone. He also taught future machinists during night classes at Boulder Valley Vocational Tech. Bill cherished his many friends and colleagues at Rocky Flats.
An avid outdoorsman, Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and family get-togethers. Per his request, there will be no public funeral service-only cremation and a private, immediate-family celebration of life. He will be laid to rest at a later date alongside his wife, Betty, at Fort Logan National Cemetery.
