I’ll especially miss Uncle Don’s jokes. I eventually learned one was coming when he started by saying “This buddy of mine…”

We were visiting our Grandparents (Uncle Don’s in-laws) one summer and Uncle Don took us kids on a hike. He got us thoroughly lost. We eventually came upon a road where a new subdivision was being built.  Only one house was complete and the owners just happened to be there (they hadn’t moved in yet).  Uncle Don had to look up Grandpa’s number in the phone book and he had to hand the phone to the home owner to tell Grandpa where to come get us. I was happy to hear a few years later that Joe was in the Boy Scouts. I figured Uncle Don would learn some skills too.

   There are so many memories I have of Don and I know it is not easy right now. He was a wonderful person and will be missed by so many. I pray that you find peace and comfort knowing he is in heaven and we will be together again. May God give you the peace and strength in the days ahead.

Don was not only a mentor to me and my merry band of friends from around age 15 up...he was one of my very best friends, period. I could write a book about our adventures in the Explorer Scouts, but only room for a few highlights here. We had a shared interest in electronics, and he would bring me to his "hobby trailer" in his Mom’s backyard(!) to work on projects as well as taking me to the electronics shop at Manual High School and letting me run amok during school days off.  When he became engaged to Carol, he took our whole Explorer group with him to WV to meet her parents(!). We went to his uncle Jake's cabin once and got attacked by flying squirrels when we opened the door! We were canoeing on the Ohio River once when we were asked to pull a dead body from the river...this led to the creation of the one and only "Stiff Dragging" merit badge that was awarded to the ones that pulled the victim out! He was instrumental in providing the incentive that I needed to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout...he always introduced me as his "First Eagle'...makes me want to cry just thinking about that. Godspeed, Don...and thanks for everything...you meant more to me than you probably ever knew.

I am very sorry to hear about the passing of Don. Dickie Hunter, Don and myself where close friends in high school. Remembering the times we had meals at his house( I think it was on Pendleton Rd). We lost contact after our first year at WKU. I also remember he and Dickie helped my mother plan my 18th birthday party. May he Rest In Peace and my condolences to his wife and family. I will always remember the good times that I had with Don at the Boy Scout meetings and the many funny stories that we shared about our time at Eastern Ky. University and from our childhood.  He was a great friend and extremely dedicated to helping out young people in the Scouts.  We worked on many Merit Badges  with the boys and his teaching abilities were very apparent.  All the members of T337 will also remember how Don took over our "aluminum can" project as a continuous fundraiser for the troop.

Don was a true and faithful friend for many years to my dad Harold Mauldin.  He would visit dad at his hardware store and joke and talk with him.  After dad went to assisted living Don visited almost every morning and treated dad like he always did. I loved that about him.  He talked about his trips and adventures.  A Good Man.
