

Russell was known by many and loved by all. He was born and raised in Louisville, KY. He graduated from Iroquois High School where he played football and held the school record for the fastest time in track and field for the hurdles. He had a tremendous love for the Lord and went to Texas Bible College in Houston, TX. Russell was then drafted by the Army and served his country proudly in the Vietnam War. After his service, he then moved back to Louisville to obtain his Associate Degree in Business at Sullivan College. Russell was the meat department manager for Winn Dixie for 25 years. He retired from Winn Dixie and then worked many years as a truck driver for various companies. When he was not telling jokes, he was telling people about the Lord. He served as a youth leader for many years and has been a faithful member of The Believers Church for 25 years. His hobbies included fishing, riding his motorcycle, playing his saxophone and singing with the award winning Thoroughbred Chorus. He loved his family deeply and was so very proud of them.
Russell was preceded in rest by his wife of 52 years, Norene Powell; his parents James H and Marian L Powell; and a brother Gerald. He is survived by a son, Doug Powell (Amy); a daughter, Lisa Goodwin (Richard); five grandchildren – Lily, Scarlett, Olivia, Avery and Austin; a sister, Bonnie Wallace and his best friend of over 50 years, John Moreland.
His funeral service will be held at 12:00pm Wednesday, November 19th at The Believers Church, 7905 Smyrna Parkway, followed by interment at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central in Radcliff. Visitation will be from 3-8pm Tuesday at Heady-Hardy Funeral Home, 7710 Dixie Hwy, and after 11:00am Wednesday at the church.
