Jim graduated from Eastern Kentucky University and later from Southwestern Seminary. He served as a music and youth minister before pursuing a degree in Education from the University of Louisville. Jim dedicated his career to teaching with JCPS until his retirement, after which he returned to teach at Presentation Academy in later years.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Marlene and his parents, James and Avo Austin. Jim is survived by his daughter, Mishael Witty (Robert), and his granddaughters, Amanda and Julie; and sister, Debbie Haden.
In addition to his career, Jim was passionate about coaching basketball for many years. He contributed to the education field as a member of textbook committees and served as a state consultant.
Jim will be remembered for his dedication to education and his love for his family and community.
Weather permitting Visitation will take place Thursday, January 29, 2026 from 2 pm to 8 pm at Heady Hardy Funeral Home, 7710 Dixie Hwy, services will take place Friday, January 30 at 11 am at the same location. Burial will take place at Louisville Memorial Gardens West.
