Condolences to the family of John Streble. Meade County High School was fortunate to have him as an Ag teacher. I was a fellow teacher and even had the pleasure of having some of his children in class.

I certainly remember your father, your mother, and your family from back when you were our next door neighbors to later when Susan was a student when I taught. I'll never forget the snowy night when we Hamilton children decided our pony needed to be moved from a field to the barn behind your house. Somehow we got his hoof caught in a fence wire. I don't know where our parents were that night, but they were not home or we never would have been out.  It was your father who came out in the cold and snow and helped us. I remember. In 2019 dad had a mini-stroke/major illness and lost his memory for many, many months.  This is one of the videos I took the day that it seemed he started gaining back long term memories all at once, sitting on the porch telling old stories.  I'm so thankful that he was able to bounce back from that for the time that he had left.

Unlike other teachers, Vocational Agriculture teachers worked all year.  Summer is the busiest farming season and it was the original reason why schools are out during summer months.  However, Dad spent summers checking in on his students by reviewing their farmwork and providing advice as needed. 
We eventually settled down in Payneville, a small town in central Meade County.  Our house was about 15 minutes from the High School in Brandenburg. We only had 11 acres much of it on the side of a hill.  However, Dad made use of as much of the land as he could.  He tilled and planted 4 separate gardens where he grew an assortment of tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, potatoes, sweet corn, onions, peas, carrots, cabbage, broccoli, and peppers.  He built a small barn and several sheds.  At different times he raised beef steers and hogs.  He slaughtered and butchered them himself with the help of family.  Our deep freezer was well stocked.
After 27 years as a high school teacher, Dad retired and focused his time on his family, home improvements, and his horticulture.  In addition to vegetables, Dad also excelled in growing flowers, shrubs, and trees.
Dad’s first wife, Martha Wright Streble, died at the age of 50 in 1989 as a result of congestive heart failure.  Eight days later, his father Roy Edwin Streble died at the age of 88 as a result of cancer.
In 2025, John welcomed the birth of his first 2 great-grandchildren: Penelope Laine Karem, and J. D. Turner.  Like his great grandfather, JD was also named after his grandfathers: James Turner and Dillon Darby.

John William Streble was born on January 27, 1932 in the town of Bartles in northeastern Meade County, Kentucky on land that was later claimed by the government for part of the Fort Knox reservation.  He was the fourth of 9 children born to Roy Edwin and Iva Mae Perry Streble.
John was born months prematurely due to his mother being severely ill.  I think that she may have had mumps. Although he was not expected to live until the next day, he survived until the age of 94, the same age his mother was when she died in 2001.  Before he left, the attending physician insisted that the baby be named.  Not having a name in mind yet, his mother chose the first names of his grandfathers: John Sauers Streble and William Perry.  In his early years, he was called JW by his parents and siblings.
John graduated from Valley High School in Jefferson County, Kentucky.  In 1954 he married Martha Wright shortly before joining the 37th Armored Infantry Battalion and being shipped to Korea.  He fortunately arrived after the end of hostilities so he did not have to serve in combat.
After his tour of duty ended, John attended the University of Kentucky on the GI Bill.  He majored in agriculture and earned a teaching degree.  In 1963, he started teaching Vocational Agriculture at Flaherty High School in Meade County.  As a preschool child I recall many summer nights on the back porch where Dad would be talking with several of his students who had come by the house to talk about farming and to tell stories.  I didn’t understand it then, but Dad was truly in his element doing what he loved.
Years later when Flaherty High was consolidated with Meade County High School, John joined Jim Greer as a Vocational Agriculture teacher and as joint Advisors to the Future Farmers of America chapter at MCHS. In 2023, I (Julie Streble) took him to the Speed Art Museum; as far as either of us knew/could remember, it was his first visit there.  With every “well, gosh darn” he exclaimed - and there were too many to count - I also found new amazement in sculptures, paintings, and tapestries I’d already seen many times before.

Easter get-together in April 2025, including children Mark, Tina, Beth, and Lisa; grandchildren Dianne, Vanessa, Julie, Heather, Meagan; and great grandchild Penelope.

Mark, Susan,Lisa,Tina. And  Beth. We are so sorry for the loss of your beloved Daddy. We love your all and are here for you with whatever you need. Your daddy was so loved by all of his family including nieces and nephews. He was always good to all of us as we grew up. He will miss his love fantastic smile and since of humor. Always know we are just a phone call away.
