

She was born on August 6, 1943, in Nancy, Kentucky, to Dessie Hines Sumpter and Ray Sumpter. On July 23, 1960 she married Charles Joe Barnes in Somerset, Kentucky. Together they built a life around faith and family. She drove a school bus for JCPS for 27 years. Madeline volunteered for many years at Beechland Baptist Church / Gracepoint Baptist Church and Southwest Ministries and was a member of The Eastern Star-Lodge (951).
Madeline was known for her kindness and for always having something positive to say. She had a quiet way of caring for those who struggled to care for themselves, a clever wit, a wonderful sense of humor, and a resilience that surprised everyone who knew her. She always brought laughter, comfort, and wisdom to those around her. Madeline enjoyed making something sweet from her kitchen to the people she loved.
She is preceded in death by her parents Brent Ray Sumpter and Dessie Hines, husband Charles Joe Barnes,son Charles Joe Barnes Jr.,sister Judy Norfleet and brother Paul Sumpter.
She is survived by her three daughters, Sharon Raley, Cheryl Knott (David) and Carolyn Barnes; her sister, Betty Holloway (Samuel); 9 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Advantage Heady-Dixie Funeral Home, 7710 Dixie Highway, on Thursday, July 16, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, followed by the Funeral at the same location beginning at 7:00 pm.
Burial will take place at Lakeside Memorial Gardens & Mausoleum, 4790 KY-80, Somerset, KY, on Friday, July 17, 2026, at noon.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice Louisville, Kentucky.
